This delightful ballet tells the story of Dr. Coppelius, a toy maker and magician, who attempts to bring life to his beautiful doll, Coppelia. He is followed by the mischievous Swanilda, who masquerades as Coppelia and saves her lover Franz from the doctor's magic.
Denis Caiozzi's production of this enchanting 19th-century classic is set to the joyous score by Leo Delibes.
Recorded at the Opéra National de Paris in April 2001, artistic director, Claude Bessy has chosen the best dancers from her group for this production; among them is the just sixteen-year-old Charline Giezendanner as Swanilda. Mathieu Ganio dances the role of Franz.
Admitted in the School of Dance at the Paris Opera at the age of 9, Claude Bessy is now the School Director. In this production she has complete artistic control and entertains with wit, esprit and highest demand on the young dancers, who were brilliant in their vigorous dancing and precision of technique.
